Chapter 18

It was David who spoke first. “Are you feeling better, Sarah?”

“Yes, I am. I think I just needed to think this out. I do have quite a few questions for Nicholas, but I wonder if I should be getting home before someone finds me missing.”

“I could escort you home, Sarah. I can come to your room and we can talk there,” Nicholas stated sounding incredibly reasonable.

Ginny looked at David's unreadable face and speculated over what he might be thinking. She decided that before she left, she needed to know. After all, the two had just been about to have sex before Ginny's meltdown and laugh fest.

“Thank you, Nicholas. Can David and I have a few minutes alone before we go?”

Both men appeared surprised by the request. Ever the gentleman, Nicholas nodded and said, “I will await you outside. I will hire a hack to take us to your home.” Nicholas regarded David for a moment before leaving the room and closing the door behind him.

David stood and went to the sidebar to pour himself another drink. Gesturing to the bottle, he asked, “Care for another before you go?”

“No, thank you,” Ginny responded, though she was really considering the opposite. To lose herself in the oblivion of drink was tempting, but counter-productive. What she really needed at that moment was bravery. She sensed that she was going to have to make a choice and it would not be an easy one.

Taking the seat across from her, David gave her his full attention. Still, no emotion showed through his dark eyes. Ginny could appreciate how handsome he was. He had dark, blue eyes and a long, thin face. His dark, brown hair was cut short and he had the body of an athlete. Then there was the scar. That added just a touch of the bad boy that appealed to many women, including herself on occasion. It wasn't until that moment that Ginny realized she'd never really looked at the man before. That made what they had been about to do even more embarrassing.

“About earlier...” she began only to be cut off abruptly.

“Forget it happened, Sarah. We were both caught up in the moment and it just got out of hand.”

“Is that what you think?” she asked, though she was thinking exactly the same thing. David had been unhelpful and taciturn, qualities that Ginny did not find attractive. She did, however, like other things about him. Mostly, he was a connection for Sarah to get to know her mother's family. It added a bit of comfort to an uncomfortable situation.

“Of course,” he responded. “What did you think happened between us?” David lifted his glass to take a sip of his brandy, eyeing her the entire time.

“Regardless of why it happened, I would still like to learn more from you. Do you think that would be possible?”

Finally, Ginny saw a crack in his demeanor. It appeared that he was both reticent and eager. Ginny waited for his response.

“I think it would be...” Best if we not see each other for now was what he wanted to say, but couldn't.
